A democratic nuclear energy transition? Public participation in nuclear activities

Abstract Governments, local authorities and civil society organizations are becoming increasingly vocal regarding the domestic transboundary risks that nuclear power represents to health environment. While participatory rights gaining importance in sector, nuclear‐related activities have been at centre of inconsistencies uncertainties practice public participation under Aarhus Espoo Conventions. Against this background, article analyses interactions between international environmental law understand how democracy principles apply context activities. It presents relationship as mutually beneficial: despite inherent tensions due nature activities, these hold important promises democratize field on one hand strengthen other.
